Compare storm severity by county

How often it hails is not how hard it hails. Put counties side by side and see what share of their hail actually reached 1.75" — the size where a composition roof starts being worth an adjuster's time — against the national 22.6%. NOAA data, 2016–2025, all 3,026 US counties. No sign-up.

How this is built. The share is a county's hail events measuring 1.75" or more, divided by all of its recorded hail events, 2016–2025. The national line is 19,666 ÷ 87,206 = 22.6%. Bars are drawn against a fixed 50% ceiling so adding a county never rescales the others. Counties with fewer than 40 recorded events are shown but not judged. The caveat: NOAA counts reports, not storms, and reporting follows population — so rural counties are undercounted on volume. That is exactly why this tool leads with the share rather than the count: the share is far less sensitive to how many people were around to call it in.
